Indian batting legend Virat Kohli etched his name further into cricket history on Sunday, surpassing Sri Lankan great Kumar Sangakkara to become the second-highest run-scorer across all formats of international cricket.
Kohli achieved the milestone during India’s first One-Day International (ODI) against New Zealand in Vadodara, where his unbeaten 93 helped India chase down 301 and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
With the innings, Kohli moved past Sangakkara’s career total of 28,016 international runs, reaching 28,068 runs and placing him only behind Sachin Tendulkar, who remains the all-time leader with 34,357 runs.
The achievement underscores Kohli’s longevity and consistency across formats — Tests, ODIs and T20 Internationals — since his debut in 2008. His innings included eight fours and a six, ensuring both personal and team success on the night.
Cricket analysts noted that Kohli’s rise to second place was not just a product of career span but also remarkable performance levels maintained across different conditions and formats. A small circle of elite batsmen — Tendulkar, Kohli and the late Sangakkara — now occupy the top three spots in the history books.
The milestone adds to Kohli’s already legendary career, and as he continues playing limited-overs cricket, fans and commentators alike are watching whether he might one day challenge Tendulkar’s long-standing record for the most international runs.
